When I worked for a children' comedy magazine, more than 25 years past, they censored some artwork, but it wasn't sexual content. They misinterpreted it as bad in other ways too stupid to go into. But I've been really fortunate. Or wise. Or some mixture.

Your illustrations frequently depict nudity. What is it about the naked form that makes you draw it so frequently?
I probably do so less than I used to, because my pornography work apart, I usually comprise nudity when it is germane to what is going on. But it is only interesting. The human body is fun to draw.
Given the American sensitivity toward nudity, does this influence your work and what you put in your books or what you publish? Or how or where you publish it?
Yes. So, yeah, it is a thing you will need to think about. I have a prose novel I've wanted to write set in Hell, and the damned souls are bare inside. My agent really supported me to tone down the nudity in a publication that was only text. I chose not to because that's taking it too far. Additionally , I tabled the publication for now, but for other reasons. Well now we need to inquire. Is it more fun to draw male bits or female bits?
Male is more humorous, female is more pleasurable.
Do you believe anything should be censored? And where does one draw the line?
Yes. This is becoming a bit dark, but anything involving kids. But even there I suppose circumstance is everything. If you just described some of the items they've truly depicted on South Park you might balk. But they are able to get away with some pretty improper items because they're experts at weighing the scale entirely on the humor. I draw the line occasionally taking into consideration the market. But in spite of what many people might believe, I've only usually calmed down on specific issues. My first draft got considerably darker and nastier in particular scenes and I pared that back to allow it to be more palatable.
Do you feel ripped about the self censorship?
Not really. There's a time and a place. If the nudity is a distraction and doesn't function the narrative it possibly does not need to be there. But there's something to be said for alternative variants, certainly. Do you think non sexual nudity should be censored?
It's about context. I love to depict nudity, but there's a time and a location. So, there's no tough, business, solution for that.
What would you think of the Nipplegate event and in addition the recent case of an Austrian museum censoring its promotional art poster of naked guys? Do you think this kind of censorship has become more common? Is that okay?
The New Yorker thing is moronic. And that's a magazine apparently for kids. And the redrawn version makes no sense in the slightest. It's simply not a gag any more. If they were covering them at the genuine exhibit that would be another matter.

There are other unclothed art posters plastered all over Vienna, except they feature full-frontal female nudes. These were perfectly satisfactory, while the male nudes caused a big uproar. Any thoughts on this or why there was such a difference in reaction to them? Should only certain sorts of nudity be censored in public?
Okay, this points out a couple of things. First is the inherent hypocrisy of male vs. female nudity. Some would assert that it is because female genitalia is internal (although these days, with some many women fully waxed, one could argue you are able to see plenty of the close human body), while men's bits are completely on show. I think it fundamentally comes down to many (most?) Folks locates penises kind of gross. Or silly. Or both. What do I understand?
